Norel González went 4-for-5 against Granma.

After a long recess Cuban Baseball’s 2017 regular season has finally arrived, with the Opening Day celebrated last Saturday.

The season officially began on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when the Granma Horses starter César García delivered the first pitch to the Villa Clara Leopards. The Leopards started one of their aces, RHP Alaín Sánchez, but needed extra innings to beat the defending champions, 2-0. It was the first extra innings game in Opening Day since the 2012-13 (52 NS) season.

Sánchez threw 7 shutout innings of 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks, while Garcia completed 6 2/3 of 4 hits, one strikeout and a walk. Both pitchers came away with a no-decision.

In the 10th inning, with the score still intact, and playing under the Schiller Rule, Villa Clara loaded the bases and reliever Juan R. Olivera walked Andy Zamora with the decisive run. Miguel Aleaga took over Olivera but ended up walking the next batter for the final score.

Yasmany Hernández (1-0) recorded his first win of the season after pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Olivera (0-1) was charged with the loss allowing the two unearned runs.

For Villa Clara outfielder Norel González (pictured) went 4-for-5 with a run scored.
