2016 Cuban Finals: Pinar Stays Alive for Another Day
Andy Sarduy drove in three runs on a 3 for 3 day and the Tobacco Growers were able to hold off a Ciego come back to pull out an 8-7 win. Livan Moinelo was able to strike out Ariel Borrero with the tying run on third to secure the victory. Ciego still leads the series three games to two.
Ciego jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning. Osvaldo Vazquez drove in one run in the second with a double. Pinar battled back on the first of Andy Sarduy’s three hits, a two run double in the fourth to even the score at 2-2.
Pinar pulled away in the fifth with a five run outburst. Sarduy contributed a two run single in that rally to close out the scoring with a third run scoring on an error. The game went to the ninth with Pinar holding a comfortable 8-3 lead.
A single, error and walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Abdel Civil walked with the bases loaded to force in a run allowing the tying run to walk up to the plate. Pinar countered by calling for closer Livan Moinelo to snuff out the rally. He walked the first hitter he faced to close the lead to 8-5 bringing the go ahead run to the plate. A ground out scored the sixth run but got the first out of the inning. Livan struck out the next batter but an error by the catcher on a steal of second scored the seventh run and allowed the tying run to advance to third. Livan bore down and retired Borrero to secure the victory.
The series is still led by Ciego three games to two. Pinar has a little momentum with two straight wins. The sixth game will not be played until Friday April 15.
