MLB 2024 | Adolis powers Rangers past A's; Chapman clinches save against Brewers; Cortés in the 15-day IL and hoping to return for the ALCS; Yordan's regular season is over

Adolis García hits his 24th home run.

In Wednesday's victory over Oakland, Adolis García went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run. After singling in his first at-bat, Garcia hit a two-run homer in the third inning, increasing the Rangers' lead to four runs. This performance marked his second consecutive game with two hits and his sixth multi-hit game this month. Despite a September batting average of just .235, Adolis has gone 11-for-33 (.333) in his last eight games, with two home runs, eight RBIs, and four runs scored. The 31-year-old outfielder has now reached 24 home runs while maintaining a slash line of .223/.283/.396, along with 66 runs scored, 83 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 626 plate appearances.

Aroldis Chapman secures his 12th save.

On Wednesday, Aroldis Chapman earned a save against the Brewers by pitching a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. He was tasked with protecting a 2-1 lead and successfully secured his 12th save by throwing out Willy Adamés attempting to turn a single into a double. Chapman has converted six consecutive save opportunities with eight strikeouts since his blown save on September 7, where he allowed four earned runs. In the current season, the left-handed pitcher has a 3.90 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 95:39 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 60 innings.

Yankees placed LHP Néstor Cortés on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow flexor strain. Hoping for return late in playoffs.

Néstor Cortés said he's hopeful to return from the 15-day injured list at some point late in the postseason if the Yankees make a deep run, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Cortés had been scheduled to start Wednesday against the Orioles, but he was scratched from the outing due to an elbow issue and was sent in for an MRI. He was diagnosed with a left elbow flexor strain and subsequently placed on the IL, making him ineligible to rejoin the Yankees until at least the ALCS. Cortés noted that he will be shut down for the next 7-to-10 days after getting a platelet-rich plasma injection for his elbow while also seeking at least two other doctors for further opinions on a treatment plan. On a positive note, Cortés told Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com that his UCL remains intact, so the lefty appears likely to avoid surgery and will hope to make a full recovery through rest and rehab. The loss of Cortés is a big blow to the Yankees' pitching depth just ahead of the postseason, especially after the lefty had submitted a 1.58 ERA over his last 40 innings.

New York-Atlanta postponed.

Hurricane Helene has caused MLB to postpone both Wednesday's and Thursday's games between the division rivals New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, which will be made up via a doubleheader Monday if the results of those contests could affect playoff positioning. New York is currently a half-game up on Arizona for the final NL wild-card spot, with Atlanta being just a half-game back of the Diamondbacks.

Randy Arozarena had a forgettable game.

Randy Arozarena had a tough day at the plate in the Mariners' 8-1 victory over the Astros on Wednesday. Arozarena, hitting cleanup and playing his usual left field position, went 0-for-5 in the game with four strikeouts, putting an end to his 13-game on-base streak. Arozarena's strikeout rate of 25.9% is the second highest of his MLB career since he became a regular in the Tampa lineup in 2021, when he had a 28.1% rate.

Yuli Gurriel got a hit on Wednesday.

Yuli Gurriel ended his streak of 13 at-bats without a hit on Wednesday by going 1-for-3 in the Royals' 3-0 win over the Nationals. He also scored a run and drew a walk. The experienced infielder now has a batting line of .277/.377/.349 with five home runs, seven runs scored, and five RBIs.

Yordan Alvarez will not make the trip to Cleveland this weekend as he stays behind to rehab his sprained knee.

Yordan Alvarez will remain in Houston to work with the training staff and will miss the Astros' final series of the regular season this weekend in Cleveland, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Yordan's regular season thus comes to a close, though manager Joe Espada noted that the slugger's sprained right knee is feeling better. Still, Yordan has yet to resume baseball activities, so he'll continue to rehab back in Houston with the goal of returning in time for the start of the wild-card round, which begins Tuesday. The 27-year-old was hoping to get some at-bats this weekend, but that won't be the case, and the Astros can only hope that he'll be ready to go for the first round of the playoffs next week. The Cuban slugger finishes his 2024 regular season with another strong campaign, slashing .308/.392/.567 with a .959 OPS, 35 home runs, 86 RBI, six steals and 88 runs scored in 552 at-bats.

Miguel Vargas fails to get a hit against the Angels. Luis Robert and Bryan Ramos combined for three hits.

During Chicago's 4-3 victory over the Angels, Miguel Vargas, who batted leadoff and played third base, did not record any hits. Vargas went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and managed to score a run. After playing 38 games with his new team, Vargas has a slash line of .120/.228/.198 with seven RBI, eight runs, and a 15:40 BB:K ratio in 146 plate appearances. During the same game, Luis Robert and Bryan Ramos from Chicago collectively secured three hits. Luis Robert batted 2-for-5 with two strikeouts, whereas Ramos went 1-for-4 with one strikeout. It is expected that these three players will be part of Chicago's future plans for the upcoming season.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. contributed with an RBI single on Wednesday.

Starting in the outfield and batting fifth, the 30-year-old player hit a single in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1 for the D-backs. This sparked a 3-run rally that put them in the lead for the rest of the game. Gurriel Jr. also drew a walk in the third inning, finishing the game 1-for-3 with a strikeout. His season stats now stand at .277/.320/.432 with 18 home runs, 73 RBIs, and seven stolen bases.

Yandy Díaz was out of Tampa Bay lineup.

Yandy Díaz was not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Detroit. For the second time over the last three games, Yandy exited the lineup as he continues to see his playing time dip this month.
