Nestor Cortés strikes out nine in quality start.
The crafty 29-year-old southpaw piled up nine strikeouts on a rainy afternoon in the Bronx while allowing just one base on balls. He kept the Tigers off the board completely through the first six innings, but he allowed a pair of singles before departing in the seventh — and both runners came around to score against the Yankees’ bullpen. Cortés got 13 whiffs on 97 pitches on the day, registering a strong CSW of 33 percent. He’ll attempt to get back in the win column as he carries a 3.72 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 46/8 K/BB ratio (48 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
Bryan Ramos went 1-for-3 and drove in a run as the White Sox topped the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
The 22-year-old infielder picked up his first career RBI on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. He also notched his first career hit with a single in the seventh inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Robbie Grossman.
Both Yandy Daz and Randy Arozarena are improving.
Yandy had his third consecutive multihit game in a 7-6 victory over the Mets. He went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and a strikeout. Despite hitting just .214/.290/.250 in his last seven games, Yandy is currently slashing .333/.368/.389 with 4 RBIs in May, after hitting .202/.272/.240 with only 6 RBIs in April. Arozarena, on the other hand, was clutch on Sunday. After going 1-for-5 with a homer, an RBI, and three strikeouts, in his final at-bat of the game he hit his homerun in a 3-2 count and two outs to tie the game at 5-5. It is still a terrible year for him as he only hits .143/.234/.278 with 5 home runs and 11 RBI. Nonetheless, hitting for power can help him regain his form.
Andy Pagés and Yordan Alvarez went hitless on Sunday.
Pagés went 0-for-4 on Sunday for the Dodgers in a 5-1 win against the Braves. Page struck out three times as well. With 22 hits in 17 games and four home runs, he's off to a good start to his career, but we will have to wait to see how the league's pitching adjusts. In a different game Yordan Alvarez also went hitless in Astros' 5-4 loss to the Mariners. Yordan is still struggling offensively, as evidenced by his 3 hits in his last seven games, and his slash line of .115/.200/.154 with no home run, one RBI, and 9 strikeouts.
Dairon Blanco swipes two bags in loss.
Blanco secured two stolen bases in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Rangers.
Blanco entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as a pinch runner for Vinnie Pasquantino, stealing both second and third base. The outfielder is now up to eight stolen bases this season and he's gotten three total swipes over the last three games. On the flip side, Blanco only draws the occasional spot in the starting lineup, limiting his upside as a stolen base option for the team.
Chapman gets his seventh hold.
Chapman pitched in the Pirates' 5-3 victory over the Rockies on Sunday. In one inning, he walked one batter and struck out two. With 20 strikeouts in 11 games, he lowered his ERA to 4.91 and was credited with his seventh hold of the season.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Padres.
Gurriel Jr. got a rare day off for the Sunday finale against the Padres. Gurriel started the previous eight games but headed to the bench Sunday after he went 2-for-33 during that span. While he rested the Diamondbacks had Jake McCarthy hit leadoff and playing left field.
Andy Ibáñez hitless on Sunday.
In a 5-2 loss to the Yankees on Sunday, Andy Ibáñez went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. He is now 8-for-27 with 3 RBI and no steals for the season, and slashing .296/.276/.296.
Giants' Jorge Soler out of lineup.
Soler was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. Soler started the past 11 games but sat Sunday after going 5-for-38 during that stretch. Wilmer Flores batted third as the designated hitter.
