  • WBSC U-18 Baseball World | Cuba capitalizes on every opportunity and defeats South Africa 10-0, thanks to outstanding pitching by Leandro Forteza

Right-hander Leandro Forteza completed five innings and Cuba took advantage of a poor game by South Africa, which committed six errors on defense, while its pitching gave up six walks and hit two by pitches, to achieve a 10-0 victory by way of a knockout in five innings, in the first game for both teams in the U-18 World Cup of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), on Friday afternoon at Nishizaki Stadium in the city of Itoman, Japan. Box score It was the first victory for a Cuban national team in a U-18 World Cup since September 4, 2017, when Yorlián Rodríguez defeated Mexico 5-1 in the qualifying round of the 28th edition of these tournaments. HOW IT HAPPENED In the opening inning, Jonathan Moreno hit a single, advanced to second and third base thanks to a sacrifice hit, and scored due to a throwing error by the South African third baseman. The team capitalized on a poor performance by South African right-hander starter Aiden McKenzie, who gave up five walks, hit two batters, and allowed two hits in the second inning, during which the Cubans went on a six-run scoring spree. In the third inning, Cuba delivered a decisive blow against reliever Caelum Stroberg, tallying three runs through a combination of two hits, two errors, and a wild pitch. Until the fourth inning, Cuban starter Leandro Forteza was pitching a no-hitter. However, right fielder Joshua Botha hit a solid grounder to second base off a high pitch from Forteza. Second baseman Leandro Pérez made an impressive save, but his errant throw to first resulted in the play being ruled a hit. During the fourth inning, Botha had the opportunity to reach scoring position. However, following a groundout by cleanup hitter and third baseman Jaden Du to second base, Botha was tagged out at second base after overstepping it during a continuous play. The Cuban starter pitched for five innings, allowing just one hit, striking out five, issuing one walk, and hitting two batters, throwing a total of 65 pitches, 44 of them being strikes. Jonathan Moreno had a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI while leading off. Yoán A. Águila went 2-for-3, scored two runs, and drew one walk. Yaidel Ruíz, the experienced catcher from Cuba, concluded the game with two RBIs. The Cuban batters struck out only once against the weakest team in their qualifying group, achieving just six hits and no extra-base hits. UP NEXT Cuba will be back in action this Saturday, facing Italy at the same time of 1:30 a.m. Cuban and Eastern Time, also at Nishizaki Stadium in Itoman.

Over the past two games, Álvarez has dominated the Yankees' pitching, achieving 8-for-10 with three extra-base hits and three RBI. Cuban Players News for the 2025 Major League Baseball season. A compilation of several sources. Andy Pagés drives the offense in defeat. In the Dodgers' 9-7 defeat to the Pirates on Tuesday, Andy Pagés went 1-for-4. His sole hit was his 24th homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning that tied the game at 4-4. Pagés faced some challenges in August, hitting .250 (25-for-100) with four homers and 13 RBIs over 28 games, but he didn't lose playing time. The Cuban outfielder has a .275/.317/.467 slash line with 24 homers, 78 RBIs, 62 runs scored, 22 doubles, and 13 stolen bases over 134 games this season. With Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s (80 RBI) season ending due to injury, it is clear that Pagés and Yandy Díaz (76) are the leading contenders to top the Cubans in RBIs in 2025. Yandy Díaz with two runs scored on Tuesday. Yandy Díaz recorded one hit in two at-bats, drew two walks, and scored two runs on Tuesday against the Mariners. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday due to a torn ACL in his right knee. The 31-year-old sustained the injury while playing left field during Monday's game and will miss the remainder of the season. Gurriel finishes the 2025 season with 19 home runs, a career-high of 10 stolen bases, and a .248/.295/.418 slash line over 129 games. The veteran outfielder holds a $13 million player option for 2026, which he is likely to exercise since he is expected to be unavailable at the start of the next season. Randy Arozarena did not get any hits on Tuesday. Following his first 25/25 season in MLB, Randy Arozarena went without a hit on Tuesday during the Mariners' 6-5 defeat to the Rays. Arozarena went 0-for-4, with a walk and two strikeouts. In a season that hasn't fully met the Cuban-Mexican outfielder's expectations, it's uncertain if Arozarena can also accomplish his first 30/30 season, as he currently has 25 stolen bases and 26 home runs in 2025. Bryan Ramos drove in two runs. Bryan Ramos earned his first two RBIs of the season during the White Sox's 12-3 win against the Twins. Making his first regular start in the lineup since being promoted to the majors on September 1, Ramos went 1-for-5 with two RBIs and three strikeouts. His sole hit was a two-run double in the fifth inning that tied the game at 3-3 against starter Simeon Woods. Ramos is expected to mainly serve as a bench bat, but he might be included in the lineup against right-handed starters while Miguel Vargas is out. This marks Ramos' second stint at the MLB level, following a 2024 season where he played 32 games, achieving a .202/.252/.33 slash line with three home runs, 11 RBIs, and 22 strikeouts. Adolis García was not included in Tuesday's lineup because of an injury. Adolis García was not included in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks. Yosver Zulueta made his second appearance. The Reds were defeated 12-9 by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, with right-hander Yosver Zulueta making his second bullpen appearance since being promoted to the majors on September 1. Zulueta managed to secure just one out and allowed a walk in the ninth inning. This marks Zulueta' second season at the major league level, following a 2024 season where he pitched in 12 games, posting a 4.96 ERA over 16 1/3 innings with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 20:7. His control problems have hindered his progress at other levels, as he has given up 138 walks in 227 1/3 innings in the Minors. Víctor Mesa Jr. hitless against the Nationals. During the Marlins' 5-2 defeat against the Nationals on Tuesday, Víctor Mesa Jr. participated in his second game since being called up to the majors on August 31. Mesa played in right field and had a hitless night, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, though he did manage to draw a walk. It's uncertain how much playing time the team will allocate to the 23-year-old, considering his tendency to get injured. While active in the Minor Leagues, Mesa has shown enough skill to become a competent outfielder at the major league level, though not a center fielder like his father. Yanquiel Fernández went hitless on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the Rockies were defeated 7-4 by the Giants, and Yanquiel Fernández did not manage to get a hit. Yanquiel went 0-for-3, striking out twice before being substituted by a pinch hitter later in the game. Manager Torey Lovullo mentioned after the game that Gurriel will have imaging done on his right knee on Tuesday and noted that "it doesn't look great." With less than a month left in the 2025 season, there's a strong possibility that this injury could end the 31-year-old's season. Adolis García managing a quadriceps injury. According to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, Adolis García sustained a quadriceps injury during Monday's 7-5 extra-inning victory against the Diamondbacks. Adolis strained his quad as he outran a possible double play at first base in the top of the ninth inning but stayed in the game. The outfielder is scheduled for evaluation on Tuesday and is currently regarded as day-to-day. Bryan Ramos is promoted from Triple-A. The White Sox called up Bryan Ramos from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. The 23-year-old third baseman experienced the major leagues for the first time last season, playing in 32 games with Chicago and posting a .202/.252/.333 slash line with three home runs, 11 RBIs, 13 runs scored, and a 7:22 BB:K ratio over 108 plate appearances. Iglesias had an outstanding August, conceding just one run while achieving a 13:0 K:BB over 13 innings. He recorded 10 saves this month, bringing his total to 23 for the year. Although he's experienced some difficult moments, as reflected in his 3.81 ERA over 56.2 innings, he maintains an impressive 1.02 WHIP and a 61:10 K:BB, indicating that his struggles have mostly been due to bad luck rather than a decline in skill. Randy Arozarena hit his 26th home run. Randy Arozarena hit a two-run home run, going 1-for-5 in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Cleveland. The Seattle outfielder evened the score at 2-2 with a 421-foot, two-run homer off Guardians starter Tanner Bibee in the fifth inning. This home run concludes an August during which Arozarena led off in all 27 games he participated in, batting .212 (24-for-113) with five home runs, four stolen bases, 21 runs scored, and 13 RBIs. Chapman's ERA has decreased to 1.02, with a 0.66 WHIP and 76 strikeouts over 53 innings this year. Regarding the contract, the agreement secures the star lefty through the 2026 season with a guaranteed $13.3 million and includes a vesting mutual option for the 2027 season. If he meets a specific innings threshold, the 2027 season would also be guaranteed, totaling $26 million over the two years. Yennier Cano aims to regain his form. Yennier Cano pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief on Sunday against the Giants, giving up one hit and one walk without recording any strikeouts. While Cano has delivered four scoreless performances in his last six appearances, his last flawless outing was on August 2 against the Cubs. Considering the 31-year-old right-hander's difficulties — with a 6.46 ERA and 1.62 WHIP since early May — Keegan Akin is likely still the preferred choice for saves for the last-place Orioles. Jorge Soler is becoming more active on the field. Jorge Soler has increased his activities on the field as of Friday, engaging in catching flyballs along with facing high-velocity pitching, according to Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. Although the 64-72 Angels are far from wild-card contention, Soler seems to be preparing for a return before the season ends, after being placed on the injured list on July 26 due to low back inflammation. He is gradually adding more activity to his workouts, but the Angels have not yet announced when he will begin a rehab assignment. Once Soler is off the IL, he is expected to resume his role as the Angels' primary right fielder, which will likely move Jo Adell back to center field more frequently. José Iglesias did not get any hits while substituting for the injured Bogaerts. In Sunday's game against the Twins, José Iglesias played as the shortstop and was eighth in the batting order. With Xander Bogaerts placed on the injured list Friday because of a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, Iglesias has found more opportunities in the San Diego infield. The 35-year-old made his fourth straight start on Sunday after hitting 3-for-12 with an RBI and a run scored in the three prior games. However, on Sunday, he went 0-for-4, bringing his season slash line down to .225/.296/.270. César Prieto achieves his first MLB career hit. In the Cardinals' 7-4 defeat against the Reds, Prieto achieved his first MLB career hit by leading off the ninth inning, despite having struck out three times earlier. He finished the game 1-for-4 with three strikeouts. With 547 hits in the Minors, including 44 home runs and a .293/.339/.436 slash line, Prieto is receiving his first chance at the major league level at 26 years old and should aim to capitalize on this opportunity with a St. Louis team that's virtually out of contention this season. Andy Pagés drove in two runs. Andy Pagés drove in two runs on Sunday in the Dodgers' 5-4 victory over the D-backs. Batting cleanup, Pagés went 1-for-4 and struck out once. • MLB 2025 | Vargas hit his first career grand slam; Yanquiel hit his second career home run; Gurriel Jr. had a three-hit game; Quero went hitless; Yordan took the day off on Thursday

Cuban Players News for the 2025 Major League Baseball season. A compilation of several sources. Miguel Vargas hit a Grand Slam but later left the game due to an injury and was diagnosed with a wrist contusion. Miguel Vargas left Thursday's game against the Yankees due to a suspected injury to his left wrist, as reported by Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Vargas was subsequently diagnosed with a contusion on his left wrist. The injury occurred when Vargas tried to catch an off-target throw at first base and collided with Aaron Judge, causing his wrist to bend backward. He stayed down on the field, appearing to have suffered a potentially serious injury. Prior to leaving the game, Vargas tagged Yankees’ right-hander Will Warren for the game-tying, 401-foot (106.6 mph EV) four-run blast in the second inning. He ended the game 1-for-3 . Yanquiel Fernández hits his second career home run. Yanquiel Fernández had a perfect 2-for-2 performance, including a solo home run, on Thursday against the Astros. Since late July, Yanquiel has seen limited playing time, typically starting just one out of every three games. He was included in the lineup for the first time in four games on Thursday and made the most of it by hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning, marking the second of his career. Fernandez has a .621 OPS in his initial 87 plate appearances, but the irregular playing time probably isn't aiding him in establishing a rhythm at the plate. On Thursday, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. collected three hits. On Thursday, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 3-for-4 in the D-backs' 6-4 win over the Brewers. Gurriel also drew a walk and scored twice. This multi-hit performance improved his season slash line to .249/.297/.421, as he continues to pursue personal bests in hits (144 in 2023), home runs (24 in 2023), and RBIs (84 in 2021). The right-hander achieved 11 whiffs among his 91 pitches and secured his third consecutive quality start. Morales made his MLB debut from the bullpen on August 1 and has started in each of his four appearances since. He's been a standout for the Athletics, posting a 1.19 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 22:10 K:BB ratio over 22.2 innings. Morales aims to continue his success in his next start, tentatively set to be on the road in St. Louis. Adolis García hits three extra-base hits against the Angels. Adolis García had an impressive performance, going 4-for-6 with a three-run home run, a two-RBI double, another double, and scoring two additional runs during Wednesday's 20-3 victory over the Angels. Adolis was central to Texas' 20-run explosion, matching the team high in RBI and leading solo in hits. The outfielder achieved his third game of the season with multiple doubles and his second game with three extra-base hits. Since being reinstated from the injured list on Saturday, Adolis has shown no signs of needing to readjust, hitting 9-for-20 (.450) with four doubles, two home runs, and three stolen bases. Yordan Álvarez hit his first home run since returning from the injured list. Chapman maintained his impressive form with this three-strikeout performance. The left-hander has pitched 11 2/3 innings without giving up a hit, allowing only four walks and striking out 14 during this period. The 37-year-old has successfully converted 26 of 28 save opportunities this season, boasting an outstanding 1.04 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP, and a 74:14 K:BB ratio over 52 innings. Yandy Díaz contributed two additional hits. Yandy Díaz extended his remarkable run by securing two hits in the Rays' 4-3 loss to the Guardians on Wednesday. Playing first base for just the 28th time this season, Yandy went 2-for-3, also drawing a walk and scoring a run. The 34-year-old has been outstanding over the past 15 games, hitting 20-for-58 with 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. He has already equaled his season-high of 22 home runs and is only 4 RBIs (74) away from his personal best, as well as 31 hits short of his top mark of 173 in 2023, when he won the American League batting title with a .330 average. Luis Robert Jr. probably out for the rest of the season. White Sox general manager Chris Getz admitted on Wednesday that Luis Robert Jr. might be out for the remainder of the season due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, as reported by Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Robert sustained the injury during Tuesday's 5-4 defeat against the Royals and was then placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Considering his moderate strain diagnosis and the fact that the White Sox have fewer than five weeks of games left, Robert's return before the season ends seems unlikely. Getz also mentioned on Wednesday that the team is "committed to Luis," which might suggest that the organization intends to exercise Robert's $20 million team option for 2026 this offseason. If Robert's 2025 season is indeed concluded, he will end with a .223/.297/.364 batting average, 14 home runs, 33 stolen bases, 53 RBI, and 52 runs over 428 plate appearances. Yordan Álvarez was activated. Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, reported first the activation of Yordan Álvarez from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. Yordan was sidelined for almost four months - since April 28 - due to a small fracture in his right hand. In Tuesday's game against the Rockies, he played left field and batted fourth. He finished the game 0-for-2 with two walks in the Astros' 6-1 defeat. Yordan went 7-for-15 during his rehab assignment, suggesting that rust might not be a major concern at the start of his return. Yandy Díaz recorded three more hits on Tuesday in the Rays' 3-0 defeat against the Guardians. The Rays only secured five hits throughout the game, making Yandy a key offensive contributor. Throughout the season, Morejón has maintained an impressive 1.78 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and a 63:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 60 2/3 innings, while contributing three saves, 18 holds, three blown saves, and a 10-4 record as one of the Padres' leading relievers. Andy Pagés had an impressive performance, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs in Monday's 7-0 victory over the Reds. He made the most of every plate appearance. His first two times at bat resulted in home runs—a solo homer in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. In the sixth inning, he reached base on an error, allowing two additional runs to score, and he secured a fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Despite some challenges in August, where he's batting .235 (19-for-81) with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 23 games, he has maintained his playing time. Pagés currently holds a .273/.318/.466 slash line with 23 home runs, 75 RBIs, 60 runs scored, 21 doubles, and 13 stolen bases across 128 games this season. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his 19th home run. Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, marking his 19th home run and his fifth in the last 11 games. This was part of a five-run sixth inning for the Diamondbacks, who were slow to start offensively due to travel delays that caused them to arrive in Milwaukee early Monday morning. Gurriel has been consistently productive with runners on base this month, driving in 32 runs across 23 August games. He has gathered 80 RBIs this season, only four shy of his career-high 84, which he reached in 2021 while playing for Toronto. Furthermore, his 80 RBIs are the highest among Cuban players this year. Aroldis Chapman secures 25th save. Aroldis Chapman secured the save in Monday's 4-3 victory against Baltimore, delivering a flawless ninth inning without any strikeouts. As Boston's closer, he has also successfully converted 25 out of 27 save opportunities. Miguel Vargas achieved a game with multiple hits. During the White Sox's 7-0 win against the Royals on Monday, Miguel Vargas achieved a multi-hit performance. He went 2-for-4, contributing his 30th double of the season and scoring a run. He hit his 22nd homer of the season, matching the career high he achieved in the 2023 season. Yandy is batting .312 with 14 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 39 runs scored over his last 269 at-bats. His 137 hits are the highest among Cuban players in the Majors this year and also rank 16th overall in MLB in 2025. Johan Oviedo excels in brief appearance. Johan Oviedo pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five batters in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday. Initially, it seemed like Oviedo might struggle when the first three batters of the second inning reached base, but he managed to escape with only one run allowed and finished his outing by retiring the last nine batters he faced. Despite his strong recovery, Pirates manager Don Kelly pulled Oviedo after four innings with just 53 pitches thrown (35 strikes). This decision was somewhat unexpected, considering Oviedo had thrown 75 pitches over five innings in his previous start. However, the team might be taking a cautious approach with him since he missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery and several months earlier this year due to a lat injury. Oviedo is tentatively scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Red Sox. Edgar Quero drives in a run. Edgar Quero served as the designated hitter in the White Sox's 7-0 victory over the Royals on Monday. He recorded one hit in four at-bats, scoring a run and driving in another. The Marines secured a significant victory on Monday, defeating the Padres 9-6. During the game, Randy Arozarena went 1-for-5 and struck out three times. Despite having the highest HardHit% of his career in 2025 at 51.0, Arozarena also has his worst K% (26.7) in the past four years and is batting only .227, with just 9 of his 24 home runs this year coming off anything other than fastballs. Jorge Soler is making positive progress. Jorge Soler has received clearance to start swinging a bat and commence running and throwing exercises, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Soler was added to the 10-day injured list on July 26 because of lower-back inflammation, and following a period of rest, he has resumed baseball activities. Although the team hasn't announced a specific timeline for his return, the fact that he's now hitting, running, and throwing suggests he might be back before the 2025 season concludes. Lázaro Montes hits his 32nd home run on Saturday. Seattle Mariners outfield prospect Lázaro Montes hit his fourth home run in as many games on Saturday while playing for Double-A Arkansas. During this period, he has also accumulated six RBIs and scored six runs. Currently ranked as the Mariners' third-best prospect, Montes has reached 32 home runs this season, tying for the lead in the minor leagues. Although his batting average is just .224 with a 30.7 percent strikeout rate over 46 games with Arkansas, he maintains an above-average walk rate of 13.1 percent to balance it out. At 20 years old, Montes needs to reduce his strikeout percentage, but his power is expected to be his ticket to the major leagues, potentially as soon as late next year or by 2027.

This was the first time the veteran closer has given up a run in his last 14 appearances, and he has now successfully converted 11 consecutive save opportunities since July 28. Víctor Mederos to the IL following disappointing performance. The Angels placed Víctor Mederos on the 15-day injured list on Sunday due to inflammation in his right shoulder. Mederos made his third start of the season during Saturday's 12-1 defeat to the Cubs and was credited with the loss after allowing six earned runs on four hits and two walks over four innings. After the game, Mederos informed Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register that his shoulder felt unusual towards the end of his outing, leading the Angels to deactivate him as they seek further information about the injury. Mederos is anticipated to undergo an MRI in the coming days before the Angels announce a possible timeline for his return. Miguel Vargas and Luis Robert Jr. each had a one-hit performance. On Sunday, Pirates’ manager Don Kelly announced that Johan Oviedo will be starting today against the Cardinals in St. Louis. The 27-year-old hurler has made two starts for the Pirates this season, posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 9/4 K/BB ratio over six innings of work. It’s a decent matchup for streaming purposes, though it’s unclear how deeply Oviedo will work into the ballgame, so his chances of earning a victory could be diminished. Andy Pagés recorded a hit on Sunday. The Dodgers secured an 8-2 victory over the Padres, with Andy Pagés going 1-for-4. He scored a run and struck out twice while covering center and right field. Despite an outstanding season, Pagés is experiencing a brief downturn late in the season, hitting .154/.214/.308 with one home run, one RBI, and eight strikeouts over his last seven games. This season, he has accumulated 21 homers and 71 RBIs. Yariel Rodríguez with issues in outing. Yariel Rodríguez faced issues again in his outing on Sunday, during the Blue Jays' 5-3 loss to the Marlins. Pitching in the seventh inning, Yariel allowed two hits, including an RBI single by Agustín Ramírez, and issued a walk, sealing the Marlins' fifth run. One of his issues in the game was his lack of control, throwing 24 pitches and only 13 of them in the strike zone. Yariel hasn't had the same effectiveness he achieved midseason, seeing his ERA rise from 2.21 in July 29 to the current 3.39. In the last 15 games, Yariel has posted a 6.59 ERA in 15 outings with 10 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings. Most concerning is his 8:10 SO:BB ratio during that period. Yoán Moncada took a break on Sunday. Yoán Moncada was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. After starting each of the past five games and going 4-for-20 with three solo home runs, Moncada received a breather for the series finale. Yordan Álvarez set to make his return on Tuesday. Manager Joe Espada stated on Sunday that there's a "strong possibility" Yordan will return from the 60-day injured list when the Astros start their homestand against the Rockies on Tuesday, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Yordan is expected to make his fourth and likely final rehab game for Double-A Corpus Christi on Sunday. In his first three games in the minors, he has started twice as a designated hitter and once in left field, achieving a 5-for-11 record with three doubles, three runs, one RBI, one stolen base, and a 2:2 BB:K ratio. Yordan initially injured his right hand during a swing in late April but continued to play through the injury until he was placed on the IL on May 5.
