MLB 2022 | Yordan shows his power, a lot of rest for Cuban players on Monday

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources.

May 30, 2022

Yordan Álvarez hit a pair of solo homers Monday in the win over the A's.

Álvarez hit 469- and 444-foot bombs today, with the second of those coming in a lefty-lefty matchup against A.J. Puk. Álvarez took Paul Blackburn deep in the first inning to give the Astros an early 1-0 lead before later launching another solo shot in the eighth frame.

He now has 14 homers on the season and the two long balls ended a 10-game homerless streak for the slugger. He's tied with Mookie Betts for second in the majors with 14 homers, placing him four behind Aaron Judge. Álvarez has notched three multi-hit games over his last four contests, raising his batting average from .246 to .260 over that stretch.

Yandy Díaz was not in the Rays' starting lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers.

Díaz got a break after making five consecutive starts following a two-game absence due to a left shoulder strain.

Jorge Soler added double number eight.

Soler went 1-for-4 on Monday's 7-1 loss to the Rockies. Soler added his double #8 of the year and is now hitting .215 for the season.

Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Hitless against the A's.

Gurriel went 0-for-3 against the A's on Monday, in a game that was all about Yordan Álvarez. Gurriel, batting 5th, walked and saw his BA reach a low .217 for the year. Gurriel is the American League defending batting champion and is expected to get better offensively for the second half of the season.

Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Slated for a rest day. Ibáñez didn't start Monday's game against the Rays. Ibáñez got the night off after starting the last two contests for Texas, collecting five hits including a pair of doubles and an RBI over that brief stretch. Josh Smith got the start at the hot corner and batted eighth with Ibáñez on the bench.

Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: On the bench against a southpaw. Hernández didn't start Monday's game against the Mets. Left-hander David Peterson was on the mound for the Mets on Monday, so Hernández retreated to the bench for the third time in the last four games. Lane Thomas started in left field and batted sixth.

Rangers' Adolis García: Got night off.

García wasn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. García took a rest day after starting each of his club's last 14 games. Eli White received an opportunity to man center field in García's absence.

Rockies' José Iglesias rested on Monday. Iglesias was not in the starting lineup on Monday's matchup with the Marlins, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reported. Iglesias got a breather after starting eight straight games, extending his hit streak to 10 contests over that stretch while notching two doubles, three RBI, a run, and two stolen bases. Garrett Hampson started at shortstop and batting eighth Monday.
