José Abreu popped a solo homer and scored a couple runs Wednesday as the White Sox downed the Cubs.
Kyle Hendricks retired the first two batters of the game but then served up Abreu's third dinger of the season. Abreu also added a single and an additional run scored. The slugger has been stinging the ball this season without much to show for it. That is due to change.
Randy Arozarena went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored as the Rays triumphed over the Athletics in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon.
Arozarena lined a one-out double to right-center off of Frankie Montas in the sixth inning. He then swiped third base but was ultimately stranded there. He then worked a two-out walk in the eighth inning and came around to score on Manuel Margot's go-ahead two-run single later in the frame. It has been a slow start offensively for the outfielder, slashing just .213/.253/.330 with no homers, six RBI, and four stolen bases in his first 24 games.
Néstor Cortés took the loss against Toronto. Gurriel Jr. went 1-for-4
Cortés had walked three batters all season coming into this one, but he struggled with his control against the Jays. None of the free passes wound up scoring, but it helped result in 83 pitches over four innings and the left-hander' shortest outing of the season. Cortés will face Toronto again in his next start, with that one coming at home. In the game for Toronto, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. - batting cleanup - went 1-for-4 adding his 7th double of the season. Gurriel's BA is now .274.
Vladimir Gutiérrez had another clunker Wednesday in Milwaukee, yielding seven runs over 4 1/3 frames.
Once again, nothing went right for Gutiérrez. The right-hander permitted eight hits -- including a couple home runs -- over his 4 1/3 innings while also walking two and hitting two batters. Gutiérrez keeps getting worse with each start and would seem to be in serious danger of a demotion. If the Reds choose to roll him out there again, he'll probably get a rematch with the Brewers next.
Guillermo Heredia hit a two-run homer and walked against the Mets on Wednesday.
Heredia giveth and taketh away, having robbed Jeff McNeil of at least a double on a great catch at the wall in right field today. Not bad for a guy who was a late insertion into the lineup because Travis Demeritte was tired after playing 18 innings Tuesday.
Manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday that Moncada (oblique) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Monday.
The 26-year-old has appeared in three games with Triple-A Charlotte since beginning his rehab assignment Saturday, and he'll apparently have a full week in the minors to get back up to speed. The oblique strain has sidelined Moncada for the first month of the season, but he's on track to make his season debut Monday versus the Guardians.
