MLB 2022 | Oviedo allowed three runs, Gurriel Jr. had workout Wednesday, Díaz resting, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources.

Oct 5, 2022

Johan Oviedo permitted three runs -- two earned -- over four innings Wednesday as the Pirates beat the Cardinals 5-3.

Oviedo struck out just one and induced only three swinging strikes on 61 pitches. The good news is he didn't issue any walks. Command and control will be the key if Oviedo is ever able to break out, as his stuff plays. He finishes the season with a 3.21 ERA over 21 appearances (eight starts).

Yoán Moncada went 1-for-5 on Wednesday in the White Sox' lopsided defeat at the hands of the Twins.

It was a forgettable, injury-plagued campaign overall for Moncada, who finishes with a calamitous .212/.273/.353 batting line to go along with just 41 runs scored, 12 home runs, 51 RBI and two stolen bases across 433 plate appearances in 104 games. The 27-year-old third baseman was one of the most exciting young players in baseball just a few years ago, but has faded from fantasy relevance over the last three years as his over-the-fence pop has declined and his ability to steal bases has completely evaporated.

José Abreu was not in the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday versus the Twins.

Abreu went 1-for-3 with a double and a run during Tuesday's 8-3 win, and it will apparently be his final start of 2022. Through 156 games this year he has a .304/.378/.446 slash line with 40 doubles, 15 home runs, 75 RBI and 85 runs in 157 games. The veteran first baseman is finishing up his ninth season with the White Sox but is slated to hit free agency during the offseason.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) is back in Toronto taking live batting practice and doing fielding work.

Gurriel (hamstring) took live batting practice and was involved in defensive drills Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reported. He has been on the injured list since September 8 because of a left hamstring strain. Gurriel wasn't activated from the 10-day injured list when the Blue Jays close out their regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader in Baltimore, but he could be a candidate to return to action when Toronto begins its wild-card round series with Seattle on Friday. The 28-year-old slashed .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, three stolen bases, 52 RBI and 52 runs in 121 games before landing on the shelf Sept. 9 with the left hamstring strain.

White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Riding pine Wednesday. Grandal didn't start Wednesday against the Twins, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Grandal went 1-for-4 with a run Tuesday against Minnesota and was in the bench for the fourth time in the last six games. Carlos Pérez started behind the plate and batted ninth.

Braves' Guillermo Heredia: Added three hits.

Heredia went 3-for-5 on Wednesday's 12-9 loss to the Marlins. The last day of the season Heredia added his third double of the year, two RBI (8) and scored once, leaving his slash line in .158/.220/.342 for the year. Heredia played only 76 games with the Braves this year and is expected to be back in the postseason roster.

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Retreated to bench. Díaz wasn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported. Díaz started Tuesday against Boston and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He went to the bench for the third time in the last four games while Jonathan Aranda took over at the hot corner and batted ninth.

Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Took seat for finale. Iglesias didn't start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reported. Iglesias went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Tuesday and went to the bench for the third time in the last four games. He ended the season with a solid slash line of .292/.328/.380 with 128 hits, 48 runs, 3 HR, 47 RBI, and 17 walks.
