Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s trio of hits leads the Diamondbacks to victory over the Padres.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. contributed three hits, featuring a double and an RBI, in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 6-3 win against the San Diego Padres. Gurriel's performance marked another three-hit game, extending his hitting streak to eight games, during which he holds a .345 average over the past seven games. His season stats show a .258 batting average and an OPS of .736 over 84 games. His recent uptick includes a .360 average in July, signaling a strong start to the month.
Jorge Soler's double leads Angels to a 6-5 victory against the Rangers.
Jorge Soler played a key role in the Angels' 6-5 victory over the Rangers by hitting a double and scoring a run. This game against the Rangers marked Soler's 12th double of the season, contributing to the close win. With 257 at-bats this year, his batting average is .206 and his OPS is .641, reflecting a challenging season at the plate. In the last 10 games, Soler has a .156 batting average, achieving five hits in 32 at-bats. Despite these difficulties, he has contributed 29 RBIs in 74 games this season, adding value to the Angels' lineup.
Miguel Vargas recorded a hit against the Blue Jays.
In the White Sox's 8-4 loss to the Blue Jays, Miguel Vargas went 1-for-5 with one run scored. Vargas is in a slump offensively, with a .123/.206/.193 slash line and no home runs, just two RBIs, and 13 strikeouts in his last 15 games. In what looks like his best season in the majors, Vargas is slashing .220/.300/.391 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs in 87 games.
Yanquiel Fernández went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by a pinch-hitter on Monday against the Red Sox.
Since joining the majors, Yanquiel Fernández has been benched for both games against left-handed pitchers. In his five starts, Kyle Farmer has twice replaced him when a lefty was pitching. This strategy would be understandable if he were on a contending team and fully prepared for the majors except for hitting lefties. However, Yanquiel is just 22, still developing, and playing for one of the worst teams in history. He should be given the opportunity to improve against left-handers, whether that’s in Triple-A or at the major league level.
Andy Pagés didn't get any hits on Monday.
Andy Pagés is facing challenges with his offense, as he went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in the Dodgers' 9-1 defeat against the Brewers on Monday. Despite this, Pagés is experiencing a remarkable season, boasting a .288/.329/.494 slash line, with 95 hits, 33 extra-base hits, including 17 home runs, 45 runs scored, and 58 RBIs. Nevertheless, in July, his performance has dipped to a .250 average with one home run and three RBIs, and he has gone hitless in seven consecutive at bats.
Adolis García drives in a run.
On Monday, Adolis García went 1-for-4 in the Rangers' 6-5 defeat to the Angels, securing his 50th RBI of the season. Although García has reached 50 RBIs, his disappointing .228/.270/.380 slash line is influenced by his Chase% (36.5), Whiff% (31.5), and BB% (5.2), all of which are among the bottom 20 in MLB this year.
Yandy Díaz contributed a hit on Monday.
In the Rays' 5-1 defeat against the Tigers on Monday, Yandy Díaz went 1-for-4 and struck out once. Having a consistently strong season, Yandy is potentially on pace to achieve career-best statistics midway through the season. His current slash line is .289/.344/.469, with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs over 85 games and 378 plate appearances.
The Angels have recalled RHP Víctor Mederos from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Víctor Mederos was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake ahead of Monday's game against the Rangers. Mederos is set for another opportunity in the major leagues after previously making one appearance this season. On April 25 against the Twins, he gave up two runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out two over three innings. On Monday he pitched one scoreless inning, in the Angels 605 win against the Rangers. He walked one batter and struckout two.
José Iglesias with one hit night.
José Iglesias was not a regular in the Padres' 6-3 loss to the D-backs. He entered the game as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-2. In a limited role with the Padres, Iglesias is hitting a meager .222/.289/.251 in 63 games and 192 plate appearances. His situation doesn't seem likely to change this year, though it could very well be his last at this level.
Luis Robert Jr. is expected to be removed from the injured list sometime this week.
There hasn't been an official announcement from the White Sox, but it seems Robert might return before the All-Star break next week. The 27-year-old center fielder was placed on the injured list in late June due to a mild left hamstring strain.
