Kerry Carpenter's three-run homer led the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Guardians in Game 2 of the ALDS.
In the ninth inning, Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer against Cleveland's AL-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, propelling the Detroit Tigers to a surprising 3-0 win in Game 2 on Monday, tying the American League Division Series at one game each. Carpenter's 423-foot blast came with two outs off Clase, who had not allowed a run since August 30 and topped the American League with 47 saves. Detroit's ace Tarik Skubal threw seven scoreless innings, extending his postseason scoreless streak to 13 innings before the Tigers broke through against the nearly untouchable Clase. The formidable right-hander had been dominant all season - without blowing a save since May - and was making only his second multi-inning appearance of 2024. Andy Ibáñez started the game for Detroit, batting third and playing second base. He went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by pinch hitter Colt Keith in the sixth inning. Hi his first career postseason Ibáñez is hitting .333 (2-for-6) with three RBIs. Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Detroit's Comerica Park.
In Game 2 of their ALDS series on Monday night, the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Yankees 4-2.
The Royals, led by team captain Salvador Pérez, secured a 4-2 victory at Yankee Stadium, leveling the ALDS at one game apiece with a strategy focused on maintaining momentum. Royals manager Matt Quatraro expressed the team's satisfaction with the win after losing the first game, emphasizing the importance of the victory. In the fourth inning, Pérez hit a 402-foot solo home run off Yankees left-handed starter Carlos Rodon. It was only the start of a four-run inning. Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson, and Maikel Garcia each contributed with RBI singles. The Royals effectively contained Yankees' stars Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, who had a quiet night with a combined 1-for-6 performance, two walks, and three strikeouts. Yulieski Gurriel continued to play a crucial role for the Royals, going 1-for-4, reaching base twice, and scoring a run in Game 2. In addition, Gurriel achieved a historic milestone by recording his 90th postseason hit, moving past David Justice on the all-time list to secure the 11th position. He is now only one hit away from entering the Top-10 alongside Carlos Correa.
The Royals will be back at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday for their first postseason game at the iconic venue since 2015.
