Yandy Díaz had an impressive performance on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs, leading the Rays to a 4-0 win over the Dodgers.
Yandy Díaz excelled against his former teammate Blake Snell, hitting two opposite-field home runs down the right field line in the first and third innings to start the game. This marked his second multi-homer game of the season. The 33-year-old, known for his ability to get on base, has been in exceptional form lately, posting a .277 average (31-for-112) with eight home runs and 21 RBIs over his last 30 games.
Aroldis Chapman secures his 20th save.
Aroldis Chapman secured a save against the Astros on Saturday, retiring both batters he faced in the ninth inning, including one by strikeout. Boston started the ninth with a 7-3 lead and handed the ball to Jorge Alcalá, who allowed two batters to reach base and managed only one out. Chapman was then called in a save situation, striking out Cam Smith and getting Mauricio Dubón to ground out to end the game. The veteran closer has been having a dominant season, allowing just six earned runs over 43.2 innings while recording a 64:13 K:BB ratio. Chapman's success has been largely due to his ability to avoid walks, with his 2.7 BB/9 on track to be the lowest of his career. Saturday's save was his 20th of the season, marking the 10th time he has reached this milestone in his career, and the first since 2021.
Randy Arozarena delivers crucial home run despite defeat.
Randy Arozarena went 2-for-5, hitting a two-run home run and scoring an additional run in Saturday's 6-4 extra-innings defeat to the Rangers. Arozarena scored the tying run on a Julio Rodríguez double in the sixth inning before hitting a two-run homer to tie the game again in the 10th. He's recorded hits in eight of his last 10 games, with four homers, six RBIs, seven runs, and four steals during that period. This season, the 30-year-old is slashing .249/.350/.472 with 22 home runs, 55 RBIs, 63 runs, and 20 steals across 477 plate appearances, and he seems to have assumed the leadoff position against right-handed pitchers following the Mariners' recent trades.
Luis Robert Jr. is on a five-game hitting streak.
Luis Robert Jr. had a hit in four at-bats, scored a run, and stole a base on Saturday against the Angels. Robert continued his hitting streak to five games by hitting a single at the start of the second inning. He then stole second base, marking his 29th steal of the year, and eventually scored the game's only run. Over these five games, Robert has achieved 7 hits in 18 at-bats, with three RBIs, five runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. secures two RBIs in the victory.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. contributed to Saturday's 7-2 victory over the Athletics by going 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. He delivered the decisive two-run single in the fifth inning. Additionally, the outfielder recorded his eighth steal of the season, marking his first successful attempt since June 24 against the White Sox. The 31-year-old currently holds a .247/.296/.402 slash line, with 12 home runs, 50 RBIs, 35 runs scored, 21 doubles, and two triples across 101 games.
Miguel Vargas has been diagnosed with an oblique strain.
Miguel Vargas was removed from Saturday's game against the Angels due to a left oblique strain. He was initially scheduled to start at first base but was taken out just before the game began. The White Sox later revealed that Vargas is dealing with a left oblique strain and is undergoing further evaluation. Considering the nature of the injury, it wouldn't be surprising if Vargas has to sit out more than just Saturday's game, though the severity of the issue is still unclear. Lenyn Sosa moved from second base to first base on Saturday after Vargas was withdrawn and may continue to start there if Vargas needs to miss more time.
Last Friday the Athletics called up RHP Luis Morales from Triple-A Las Vegas by selecting his contract.
In his major-league debut on Friday, Luis D. Morales pitched two innings in relief against the Diamondbacks, allowing one run. The 22-year-old right-hander, known for his velocity, is considered one of the most promising young talents in MLB. This season, he quickly advanced to the big leagues after achieving a solid 3.73 ERA and a 107/35 K/BB ratio over 89 1/3 innings (23 appearances, 14 starts) between Triple-A Las Vegas and Double-A Midland. We'll have to wait and see if Morales can replicate his success in the Minors at the MLB level.
